I’m almost 25 and have been considering taking jazz, tap, ballet and ballroom dance but can’t get the money for it right now. Is it ever too late to start taking any of these classes if I want to be really good at it? I know there is no set number of years experience needed to be really good but is there an average or general time frame so I can get an idea?

You’re never too old to learn to dance.

I was learning ballet from the age of 2 up until i was 15 (then GCSEs happened and i stopped). two years ago i went from a physical job in a shop to sitting at a desk in an office and decided i needed some sort of exercise – so i took up salsa. loads of places do it and i can really recommend it. i’m at around an intermediate level now, and am currently doing a beginners course in latin and ballroom – the latin comes a bit more naturally to me than the ballroom!

it depends how good you want to get. if you want to turn professional and compete, then by all means go for it, but bear in mind you’ll be up against people who’ve been doing it since they were children. if you just want to do it for fun, but get really good, then you’ll find that it’ll probably take about 18 months-2 years to get to a good standard.

if money is an issue then you might have to pick just one and learn that, or just learn one at a time.

I took a salsa class once, and absolutely loved it. I want to take more classes and get good, but don't want to do it without my boyfriend because then I won't have a dance parter (that I want)! He's not really into dancing (he's a white boy and listens to metal!). How can I get him to take a class with me?!

Nothing is sexier than a white boy who can dance salsa. You sure you want to put that out there on the market?

Show him some of your moves. He will enjoy your hips moving and decide he wants to see it more. Just encourage him that by being one of the few guys in the class he wont be looked down upon and if he messes up no one will care because everyone-including you- will be impressed that he is there trying to learn. Make into a fun date instead of the pressure of getting good. Most likely he will enjoy it the first time and will want to come back.

Just dont let his friends know. They will get jealous and make comments about this new hobby.

I would like to take a pole dancing class in the surrounding metro Atlanta area. I live in Gwinnett. Does anyone know of a dance studio offering this?

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get trained in dance even though class prices are too expensive?

Find a class and talk to the teacher. A lot of studios will offer things like scholarships or loans, or at least will work out payment plans, but you do have to ask. It might take a couple studios saying no before you find one that will work with you, but there's almost always one that will in any area. Depending on the type of dance, look into programs at community centers and community colleges. It's a lot harder to get a discount at these because the administrative fees aren't in the teacher's control, but the class fees are normally a lot lower (around here, one ballet class a week at a studio = $45/month; taught by the same teacher at a community center = $50/three months).

If that's really not an option, try videos or the internet. They're a really short term option and won't get you very far (you can't get corrections on your technique or another explanation if the video is unclear), but they're a good place to start if you just want to learn the basics.
